A Training on Darag Native Chicken Production was organized by WVSU's University Extension and Development Center (UEDC) as part of its mission to further develop the technology transfer and commercialization aspect of the Darag native chicken project which is a PCAARRD funded flagship program of the university. The training was conducted last May 19, 2014 at the Technology Promotion Center at WVSU.
Forty-six participants mostly comprised of farmer-entrepreneurs and a farmer group from San Miguel, Iloilo attended the training. Some of the participants are retirees who want to go into Darag native chicken raising as an investment and retirement venture.
During the training, the participants learned about the history, development and importance of the Darag native chicken as well as the basics of entrepreneurship. The breeding and selection for Darag native chicken such as handling, care and management techniques were taught to the participants.Other important topics covered during the training were: harvesting and post-harvest handling handling of local Darag production facilities; local feeds and feeding; pest disease identification, prevention and control; site visit and demonstration on vaccination.
