Dr. Jaime C. Cabarles Jr., Dean of the College of Agriculture, Resources and Environmental Science of Central Philippine University and project leader of an R&D component of the PCAARRD funded Darag native chicken program in Western Visayas won the 2014 CHED Republica Award (Outstanding Research and Publication Award/Natural Sciences and Agriculture Category). The CHED Republica Awards are held every two years to recognize outstanding researches that advance national development goals.
Dr. Cabarles' research on the "Production Potential of Native Chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus L.)" bested 11 other entries from top universities in the country. His work focused on the diversity of genetic resources that serve as reservoir of genes that are adaptable to local conditions and consumer preferences for meat and egg products. The said research sees the promising outcome of genetically improved native chickens for production.
