WESVAARRDEC Training on Refereed Journal Publication

The Western Visayas Agriculture Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development Consortium (WESVAARRDEC) in coordination with the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD) conducted a “Training on Refereed Journal Publication” last July 18-20, 2018 at The Mansion, General Luna St., Iloilo. 

WESVAARRDEC invited Dr. Jezie A. Acorda, DVM, MS, PhD of the College of Veterinary Medicine – UP Los Baños, Laguna, to be the resource person for this training along with his wife, Mrs. Girlie May S. Acorda as the facilitator.

This 3-day course aims the participants to rewrite a completed research outputs following a format of a journal and produce publishable research outputs for technical review since publication of research outputs is necessary and is extremely useful for a wider dissemination of information to concerned beneficiaries and stakeholders.

DA-WESVIARC dominates 27th RSRDH

The Department of Agriculture-Western Visayas Agriculture and Research Consortium (DA-WESVIARC) bagged most of the awards during the recently concluded 27th Regional Symposium on Research and Development Highlights (RSRDH) held last August 25, 2017 at the Research and Extension Building in West Visayas State University, La Paz, Iloilo City.

The RSRDH is an annual activity organized by WESVAARRDEC and sponsored by Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD) to showcase and recognize significant R&D findings of the consortium member institutions (CMIs) in agriculture, aquatic and natural resources (AANR) sectors. This year’s regional symposium theme “Advancing Science and Technology towards Inclusive Growth (ASTIG) in Region 6” was adopted from the WESVAARRDEC FIESTA 2017 over-all theme. A total of 26 entries for the research (natural/biological science and social science) and developmental/ technological categories were presented during the parallel sessions in the same building. About 100 faculty and staff researchers and agriculture students from CMIs and invited high schools came to participate in the event. 

DA-WESVIARC dominated the developmental/technological category winning the top three best papers with their entries dubbed as “Philippine Rice information System (PRISM) in Western Visayas”, “Dissemination of Associated Technologies for Direct Seeded Rice in Irrigated and Rainfed Ecosystem” and “Deployment of Rice Crop Manager (RCM) Recommendations to Rice Farmers in Region 6” respectively. In addition, DA-WESVIARC won the 1st and 2nd runner up awards in the poster category. 

On the other hand, the newly reengaged DENR through its research arm Biodiversity, Coastal, Wetlands and Ecotourism Research Center (BCWERC) bagged the best paper award on the natural/biological science category with their entry “Biodiversity Profiling and Carrying Capacity Determination of Priority Nature-based Ecotourism Areas in Gigantes Group of Islands, Carles, Iloilo” alongside with the Capiz State University on the social science category with their entry “Status of Nipa Industry: Insights to Alternative Futures”.

Best Paper winners in research and developmental category will be the consortium’s entries next year to the National Symposium on Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (NSAARRD) organize by DOST-PCAARRD.

WESVAARRDEC - Training on IEC Materials Development

The Western Visayas Agriculture Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development Consortium conducted a "Training on Information, Education and Communication (IEC) Materials Development" last August 11-12, 2016 at the Goducate Training Center, San Miguel, Iloilo. The two-day training was facilitated by Ms. Antonieta J. Arceo of the Agricultural Training Institute (ATI) in Quezon City and was attended by 29 participants from different member institutions of WESVAARRDEC.

The Consortium Member Institutions (CMIs) have available mature technologies and significant R&D breakthroughs ready for promotion or dissemination and IEC materials are the useful tools to promote and disseminate them to target stakeholders. Hence, the training was conducted to equip the participants with the skill on IEC materials development.

The Western Visayas Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development Consortium (WESVAARRDEC) has finally identified and endorsed to DOST-PCAARRD its top three (3) priority commodities for Region 6. These three commodities are the angel wings clam (Diwal), yellow cattle and citrus, and will be the focus of PCAARRD's Grant-in-Aid R&D support to WESVAARRDEC for 2016-2017.

The Western Visayas Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development Consortium (WESVAARRDEC)  joined the SIPAG FIESTA Exhibits and Bazaar held last March 2-4, 2016 at DOST-PCAARRD complex, Los Baños, Laguna. The activity was conducted by the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PCAARRD) to showcase the best of the Council's agri-aqua research and development (R&D) outputs generated from 2010 to 2016.

SIPAG stands for Strategic Industry S&T Program for Agri-Aqua Growth and FIESTA means Farms and Industry Encounters through the Science and Technology Agenda.

The event featured exhibits from the regional consortia and Los Baños Science Community as well as a Techno Forum on livestock, aquatic, forestry and natural resources, and crops sectors. The event also included technology demonstrations on artificial insemination on goat, use of portable milking machine in dairy buffalo, swine RFID and remote sensing, and organic farming.

WESVAARRDEC, as part of the regional consortia exhibit showcased the new technology on lamination and stiffening of bamboo woven coasters and panel boards featuring the authentic bamboo woven products of Maasin, Iloilo, the leading manufacturer of bamboo products in the region. Another commodity of the region showcased by the consortium was the food products from Aklan State University. These food products featured, the sago spread and maja de sago, were made using the sago flour produced from sago (Metroxylon sagu Rottb.) palm.

Participants from the consortium were spearheaded by the consortium director, Dr. Noeni S. Nepomuceno, along with Dr. Reynaldo N. Dusaran and Dr. Carmelo V. Ambut as the consortium's new cluster coordinators in Technology Transfer Cluster and Knowledge Management Cluster respectively.

The SIPAG FIESTA Exhibits and Bazaar were attended by students, teachers, PCAARRD, partner agencies, farmers and fisherfolk, research and development workers, and DOST officials and staff. (BDB)

25th RSRDH winners bared

Capiz State University, Iloilo State College of Fisheries and Central Philippine University emerged as the top winners during the 25th Regional Symposium on Research and Development Highlights (RSRDH) held last October 29, 2015 at Lopez Jaena Hall, West Visayas State University in Lapaz, Iloilo City.     

About 57 faculty and staff researchers from WESVAARRDEC's consortium member institutions  gathered to participate in the activity  which is held every year to  foster research productivity and friendly competition among the member agencies. The theme for this year's symposium is "Western Visayas: Innovating for Global Competitiveness." A total of 34 research entries comprising natural/biological, social science and  developmental/technological categories were presented during parallel sessions at the audiovisual rooms and readers services section of the University library.

Capiz State University's entry "Immunostimulatory Effects of Probiotics Against Aeromonas hydrophilia Infection in Tilapia" by Stephanie S. Pimentel and Kristel E. Corpuz  was adjudged  as the best paper in the natural/biological science category. Meanwhile, ISCOF's entry "The Economics of Using Biodegradable Wastes in Vermicomposting" authored by Myrna P. Prudente  bagged the best paper award in the social science category.

Central Philippine University bested all other entries in the technological/developmental research category with their paper "Development of Supplemental Feeds  for Free-Range Native Chicken."

WESVARRDEC conducts research proposal preparation and data analysis workshop

The Western Visayas Agriculture Aquatic and Resources Research and Development Consortium continued to strengthen the research capabilities of its consortium member institutions through another follow-up capability building training entitled “Research Proposal Preparation and Data Analysis Writeshop.” The seminar which was held last September 23-25, 2015 at Iloilo Midtown Hotel in Iloilo City served as a refresher course for aspiring faculty-researchers who are already conducting researches.  A total of thirty researchers representing WESVAARRDEC’s various member agencies attended the three-day lecture workshop.

Facilitated by Dr. Cherry Nepomuceno of WVSU Learning Assessment Center and Dr. Greta G. Gabinete of the University Research and Development Center, the seminar aimed to equip the said participants with knowledge  on operational research methods and design  as well as  skills on writing research proposals for research funding by prospective agencies such as CHED-GIA, PCAARRD-GIA etc. The activity is supported in part  by the Grants-in-Aid (GIA) Program of the Department of Science and Technology Regional Office VI.

New MOA and By-laws renew PCAARRD's support to WESVAARRDEC

Borne out of the Tagaytay Joint Consortium Director and RRDCC  Chairperson meeting held  in April 2015, the Philippine Council for Agriculture and Natural Resources Research and Development  affirmed its support to the consortium  through a confirmation of Memorandum of Agreement and By-laws signed  between PCAARRD, WESVAARRDEC and host institution West Visayas State University during the Special RRDCC meeting held  last September 23, 2015 at Iloilo Midtown Hotel. The new agreements supercede previous MOA and By-laws signed. The new MOA indicates PCAARRD's financial support to the consortium for the last quarter of the year as based on  expected deliverables and commitments.

Likewise Dr. Danilo E. Abayon  of Aklan State University was re-elected as RRDCC Chairperson while Dr. Victor E. Navarra was elected as Vice-chairperson. As stipulated in the by-laws, a seven- member executive board was created composed of the following:

PCAARRD conducts public procurement seminar for Iloilo R&D project implementers

The Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAARRD) in coordination with Western Visayas Agriculture Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development Consortium (WESVAARRDEC) conducted a “Seminar and Sharing of Good Practices in Public Sector Procurement” at Smallville  21 Hotel  last September 8-9, 2015. The training aimed to enhance the capacity and capability of those involved in procurement to facilitate the implementation of R&D projects. The Iloilo leg is a part of a seminar series  conducted nationwide in  Los Baños, Baguio City, Cebu City , Davao City and Cagayan de Oro City.

In Iloilo City, the participants from PCAARRD project implementing institutions such as SEAFDEC-AQD, University of the Philippines in the Visayas, Department of Agriculture RO 6 and WVSU attended the seminar.    

Director Renato M. De Vera, Director of DBM Region IV-B and member of GPPB Composite Team of Trainers served as the lecturer and resource speaker during the two-day seminar.  The important topics covered by the seminar included the following topics: (1) Procurement Planning Updates/Amendments to RA 9184 and its IRR; (2)  Guidelines of procedures of the procurement of goods, infrastructure and consulting services; (3) Alternative  modes of procurement; (4) Negotiated procurement; (5) New issuances and amendments and their implications. An assessment and evaluation of issues and concerns regarding procurement cases was also tackled by the resource speaker.             

DENR-ERDS conducts bamboo technology field day in Maasin, Iloilo

The Ecosystems Research and Development Service (ERDS) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Region 6 held a "Technology Field Day" at the Common Service Facilities (CSF) in Brgy. Daja, Maasin, Iloilo last March 19, 2015. The activity was conducted in line with two PCAARRD-funded projects entitled,     "Enhancing Bamboo Production in Maasin, Iloilo: An S&T Community-Based Farm (STBCF) Approach" and "Production and Marketing of Bamboo Woven Products: Enhancing on Business Enterprise Through Techno Mart in Maasin, Iloilo." The main objective of the activity was to showcase successful application of STCBF interventions in improving productivity and increasing income of bamboo farmers and manufacturers in Maasin, Iloilo. It also aimed to enhance the awareness of future adopters such as farmers, entrepreneurs, and other clients of the importance of utilizing appropriate production methods, management know-how and processing technologies. Lastly the activity aimed to fast track the mobility of bamboo products from Maasin to various markets in Wstern Visayas in partnership with government and business sectors.

The activity was attended by project leaders from PCAARRD, DENR-ERDS and representatives from WESVARRDEC, Department of Agriculture, Philippine Information Agency, Iloilo Chamber of Commerce as well as bamboo project beneficiaries and partners composed of 5 clusters  groups from Brgy. Abay, Brgy. Bolo, Brgy. Daja, Brgy. Dagami and Brgy. Buntalan. The 5 cluster groups are composed of 10 members each and have the responsibility as project implementers and partners.     

After the opening program, the participants engaged in a technology forum where a demonstration of nursery establishment and bamboo potted propagules production was featured. Other topics covered by the technology forum include bamboo rehabilitation, post harvest/treatment, bamboo weaving, bamboo lamination and production of coasters and panel boards. In the afternoon, a field tour/exhibit 

was conducted in Brgy. Daja and four other barangays.

Central Philippine University shines in 24th RSRDH

Central Philippine University (CPU) emerged as the big winner during the recently concluded  24th Regional Symposium on Research and Development Highlights held at the Center for Teaching Excellence in  West Visayas State University. The RSRDH  is an annual research competition organized by WESVARRDEC that showcases and recognizes the best research outputs in the agriculture, aquatic and natural resources sector. The activity is sponsored in part by the Grants-in-Aid (GIA) Program of the Department of Science and technology Regional Office VI. 

CPU's research entries "Antioxidant Activity and Citral Content of Lemongrass Tea" and  "Formulation, Package Development and Shelf-Life Testing of Lemongrass Ready-to-Drink Beverage Products" respectively won the Best Paper award in the Natural/Biological Research and Developmental/Technological Research Category.

CPU's entry in the natural/biological category bested 17 entries from consortium member agencies throughout Western Visayas. The study compared the antioxidant activity and citral content of various developed lemongrass formulations.  Meanwhile  CPU's entry in the developmental/technological research category which bested 7 other entries aimed to formulate and package good tasting beverage products containing high amounts of antioxidant and citral content  and subject these to shelf-life studies.  

Meanwhile, Capiz State University's entry "Price Dynamics and Volatility Spill-Over  Effects In  Farm-Retail Price Relationships of Chicken and Pork, 1990-2013 won the Best Paper award  in the social science research category. This time-series study investigated causality using Granger causation, co-integration and volatility spillover effects (“heat waves” and “meteor shower” effects) between producer and consumer prices of chicken and pork markets in the Philippines, using the methodology of the Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroscedastic (GARCH). 

In the poster making category, Carlos Hilado Memorial State College's entry " Development of a Fish Solar Dehydrator" garnered the first prize award.
